A nature trail emerges around Landek

In July the Ostrava Mining Museum Friends’ Club (KPHMO) began creating a new nature trail through the national natural landmark Landek, a place intimately linked to the beginnings of mining in North Moravia. This new trail will connect the three original and now unsatisfactory trails into a single one, furnished with new resting places and information boards. All of this is possible thanks to grants from the European Union, the OKD Foundation and assistance from other partners.

The new trail exceeds 5 KM in length and will be an ideal destination for families and school field trips. “Visitors will learn about the history of mining and the exceptional geological features of the Landek landmark, and about local nature, significant historical milestones and archaeological finds,” said KPHMO chair Rodan Broskevič.

“Supporting mining traditions is one of our priorities. That is why we have helped over the long term to develop the mining displays at Landek Park, as well as the new nature trail,” said OKD Foundation Deputy Director Lenka Marková.

The creation of the nature trail forms the first stage of the planned Landek Park project. The ambition is to establish a tourist attraction for Ostrava and the whole region. The interest group “Dolní oblast Vítkovice”, which looks after the territory, intends to revitalise the landmark and to regenerate the vegetation and scenic trails, and to construct terraces and bridges, an archaeological park, wharf and other facilities.

Landek Hill was declared a protected natural landmark in 1966 and a national natural landmark in 1992. The site includes cultural monuments: two archaeological sites and the premises of the former Eduard Urx colliery.
