An expression of deep sorrow over the tragedy in the Handlova mine in Slovakia

11/8/2009

Dear Dr. Čičmanec,

On behalf of everyone at New World Resources, I would like to send our sincere condolences to the families, friends and loved ones of those who died in the tragic incident at your mine in Handlová.

The disaster was a tremendous shock to all of us at NWR, especially as we could imagine how we might feel if a similar accident were to occur in one of our mines. Such feelings only intensify our compassion for you in these difficult times.

Although we are all aware that work in coal mines is inextricably tied to risk, although we know that despite the very best resources and equipment unforeseeable accidents can and do occur, and although we try our best to prevent such accidents and to be prepared to face them should they occur, we are always shocked when such a tragedy strikes. We can be technically prepared, we can have the best rescue equipment available, but we, like all in the mining industry, can never be prepared for deaths of colleagues.

I am sure that you and your team are doing everything to ease the suffering of the bereaved families. If we can be of any assistance to you – materially, technically or in any other way – please do not hesitate to contact me or my colleagues at New World Resources.

Sincerely,

Marek Jelínek
