Our Community

Our contribution to the local communities where we operate is channelled through the OKD Foundation, a charitable organisation established by OKD in 2008.

The OKD Foundation was established to support and develop spiritual and humanitarian values, environment, education, sports and cultural activities, as well as social and medical services. The OKD Foundation's key objectives also include providing support for the North-Moravian region, fostering mining traditions and assisting non-profit-making organisations in processing European projects.

The Foundation has rapidly become a well respected leader in the non-profit sector in Czech Republic and has supported more than 800 public benefit projects to date through the following key programmes:

  • For Health – social and health care projects
  • For Joy – cultural and educational projects
  • For the Future – development of the region and environment
  • For Europe – help for non-profit-making organizations in obtaining support from EU funds

As well as improving the quality of life in the region, the OKD Foundation also provides funds to help in large-scale, unexpected crisis situations, such as the floods in the North Moravian region in 2009 and 2010, as well as supporting the families of miners who perished in the tragic disaster in the Handlová mines in Slovakia.

The Managing Board of the OKD Foundation reviews grant applications for each of the OKD Foundation programmes separately, usually once a year.

NWR has donated a total of EUR 10.6 million to the OKD Foundation since 2008.

For the second year running, OKD received a Top Filantrop award as the second most generous corporate philanthropist in the Czech Republic based on its contributions to the support of projects beneficial to the public.

St. Barbara Civic Association

In addition to the OKD foundation, NWR also directly supports the St. Barbara Civic Association, which helps children who have lost a parent through a mining accident.

The Association was set up by OKD and currently cares for one hundred Czech, Polish and Slovak children, supporting their education and their leisure time and health by providing them with financial backing for a wide range of needs including school fees, accommodation at halls of residence or school hostels, learning aids, language courses, driving lessons, art classes and leisure activities, and health care for both the miners’ children and their widows.

Since 2008 NWR has donated some EUR 174,000 to the Association.
