OKD, a.s. ('OKD')
OKD is the only producer of hard coal in the Czech Republic, operating in the southern part of the Upper-Silesian coal basin. OKD’s reserves are located in the Karvina and Ostrava regions, covering a total area of approximately 120 square kilometres. The area is noted for the quality of its coal, which has a high calorific value and low sulphur content. Around 60 per cent of OKD’s output can be sold as coking coal. Many of our customers have relied on our coal and its characteristics for decades.
OKD currently operates four active coal mines - The Karvina Mine (combining mining sites CSA and Lazy), The CSM Mine, The Darkov Mine, and The Paskov Mine.
OKD produced 11.0 million tonnes of coal in 2009 of which 5.2 million tonnes of coking coal and 4.9 million tonnes of thermal coal were externally sold. Coking coal sales in 2009 were approximately 43 per cent hard coking coal and 57 per cent semi-soft. Thermal coal sales in 2009 were approximately 80 per cent coal and 20 per cent middlings.
