OKK Koksovny, a.s. ('OKK')

OKK is the largest producer of foundry coke in Europe. The Company operates two plants in Ostrava, the Jan Sverma and Svoboda facilities, which combined operate four coking batteries totalling 226 chambers producing 0.8 million tonnes of coke in 2009. Svoboda is the largest of the two facilities. Coke sales in 2009 were approximately 45 per cent blast furnace coke, 25 per cent foundry coke and 30 per cent other applications.

In addition to various types of coke produced for NWR's exacting client base on both domestic and foreign markets, coking plants produce an indispensable volume of coke-oven gas, desulphurised below the level of 500 mg/m3, tar, benzol, ammonium sulphate and elementary sulphur.

Under Coking Plant Optimisation Programme ('COP 2010'), all coking production is being consolidated at Svoboda and the Jan Sverma plant will be shut down by the end of 2010. Plans to modernise the Svoboda facilities include the refurbishment of battery no. 8 (including replacing the main collecting pipeline of the battery’s chemical element). Additionally, a new 220kt battery is in the process of being completed. The linings of the new battery chambers are complete and production is expected to start at the end of 2010.
