Our coking coal is noted for its quality and has a high calorific value and low sulphur content. It is used in the production of steel by metallurgical plants and also for household heating. It is generally more expensive than thermal coal.
In 2008 NWR produced 12.7 million tonnes of coal, of which coking coal and thermal coal accounted for 55 per cent and 45 per cent, respectively. The thermal coal to coking coal ratio displays minor year-on-year changes, depending on market demand and geological conditions.
Within the NWR group, high-quality coking coal is produced by Czech coal mines operated by OKD, namely:
- Karviná Mine – Lazy Mining Plant
- Paskov Mine
