Thermal coal, also known as steam coal, is used in combustion processes by power producers and industrial users to produce steam for power and heat.
Thermal coal retains a secure market position with approximately 40 per cent of electricity generated worldwide from burning thermal coal worldwide. In 2008 NWR produced 12.7 million tonnes of coal, with thermal coal and coking coal accounting for 45 per cent and 55 per cent, respectively. The thermal coal to coking coal ratio may show minor year-on-year changes, depending on the market demand and geological conditions.
Within the NWR group, high-quality thermal coal is produced by Czech coal mines operated by OKD, namely:
- Karviná Mine – ČSA Mining Plant
- Darkov Mine
- ČSM Mine
